Robert Weathersby, 42, of Calumet City, Illinois, was arrested after investigators determined he orchestrated a scheme to redirect a law firm's payment intended for a known business associate, according to the Nassau County Police Department’s Fraud and Forgery Unit.
On Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2024, at 12:30 p.m., a Nassau County law firm received an email that appeared to be from a trusted associate, requesting a change in payment instructions for an upcoming settlement, detectives said. Acting on the email, the firm wired $709,000 to a new financial account.
Weeks later, the associate contacted the firm, claiming they had not received the payment. An investigation revealed that the funds had been wired to Weathersby’s business account, police said.
Weathersby was arrested in Calumet City by the Chicago Police Department and extradited to Nassau County, where he was arraigned on Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025, at Nassau County Court in Mineola.
He is charged with Grand Larceny in the 2nd Degree, police said.
This case remains under investigation.
